At Barnes Ranch, we promote responsible horse
ownership. In the Horse Basics Series, Gerrie provides potential and new horse owners with real-life information, so they can make informed decisions when considering the addition of a horse to their lives.

Basics of Horse Care, developed by Gerrie, uses a hands-on clinic to provide one full day of instruction and practice in caring for a horse. Using our schooling horses you will learn how to perform daily tasks and interact with a horse in a safe manner.

Note: For your safety and to anticipate horse behavior, it is recommended that you have an understanding of a horse’s flight and herd instincts. This information is covered in the second seminar: The Basics of Owning a Horse.

In the Basics of Horse Care you will learn:

How to safely get a horse from a stall or pasture
How to correctly halter a horse
How to lead a horse
How to tie a horse safely
How to safely pick out a horse’s feet
How to groom a horse
How to cut the horse’s bridle path and trim his face and ears
Longeing a horse at liberty/round penning
How to tell if a horse is hot and how to cool him down
Grooming a horse after riding
Safely returning a horse to the stall or pasture
